Children who move to a new district or change schools are faced with the challenge of making new friends and adapting to a new enviornment. This can be a difficult and stressful time in a child's life. I have created a club that can help smooth the transition from moving from one to school to another.

The New Comer’s Club’s main goal is to assist new students who enroll in a new school make a smooth transition. This club helps students who start in September as well as throughout the year feel welcome and part of the school community. At each meeting, students discuss how the school year is progressing as well as have an opportunity to discuss problems and ask questions. An age appropriate craft or community service project for all grade levels is available. Many children are faced with the challenge of making new friends and having to adapt to a new environment. This can be very difficult. The target audience of The New Comer's Club is children who find it difficult to adjust to their new school/environment. These children often have no friends and are not comfortable making new acquaintances.  The goal of the club is to provide them with the skills, tools, and support they need to make a smooth transition.  The Club commences in December because at that point the children have adjusted and made friends.  It is important that they no longer feel like the "new student" any more but rather a part of the school family.  If however, a student still requires more time to adjust, the guidance counselor/and or club leader will continue to provide further assistance.  In addition, new students who enroll after completion of the club, are provided with "New Student Survival Kits" as well as all handouts from each meeting.

Cost

The estimated cost to run the program for a a year is approximately $150. Schools interested in implementing a New Comer’s Club could fund the program the initial year from donations provided by the school PTA/PTO or parent groups. After a successful first year, funds could be added as a line item as part of the schools budget.
